Forløperen til det som nå er Gold Medal Squared (GMS) ble grunnlagt av Carl McGown i 1985 og GMS trekker fortsatt fulle hus på sine trenerseminarer. Deres «volleyball camps and clinics» regnes for å være blant de aller beste i USA. Da McGown i 2010 ble medlem av AVCA Hall of Fame sa Jim McLaughlin som er hovedtrener på University of Washington følgende om nominasjonen:

«…because of his practice methods, systems and match preparation, he is the best volleyball coach in the United States, and, probably, in the world today.»
